The Church of the Holy Cross is a Grade I listed building, located in the beautiful North Wiltshire village of Ashton Keynes. We were contacted to visit the church following recent discussions among the PCC to renew the poor lighting and electrical installations. Working alongside the church, we provided a sympathetic lighting design and specification based upon the brief originally produced by members of the church.
The existing lighting consisted of a few metal and glass shades located throughout, mounted at high level and switched within the vestry. With lamps regularly failing and the lighting levels very poor, we installed a new DALI controlled LED lighting system. The idea was to increase general lighting levels significantly throughout the Nave, Aisles and Chancel, as well as highlight important features. The roof was also an important area to illuminate within the Nave and Chancel. Another important feature that was to be highlighted were the Arches within the Nave. Small LED fittings were installed to the top of each capital, and new wiring discreetly installed, painted to match the surrounding fabric. With a new dimmable scene setting system installed, the church now has plenty of control and options to select for any service or event.
Along with the new lighting system, A bespoke lantern was installed within the North Porch, LED lamps installed to all existing fittings within the Vestry and South Porch and repairs were carried out to the exterior lighting with damaged or non-working fittings replaced or re-lamped. Even the organ received some new lighting, new LED fittings illuminate the pedals and small spotlights give plenty of illumination for the music and console.
At the request of the DAC and architect, it was also necessary for us to report on the rest of the electrical installation and make recommendations on any rectification works.
The existing distribution boards were replaced, incorporating RCD protection for all circuits. Correctly rated circuit breakers were installed as some existing were incorrect. Surge protection was also installed and a report conducted for all wiring and circuits. The suspended heaters within the South Aisle we tripping the circuit breakers, so these were replaced and new local switching installed.
