St. Matthew’s Church in Worthing approached us to provide a lighting design, with the goal of increasing overall lighting levels, lowering energy consumption and adding additional lighting to highlight architectural features. Coloured lighting was also requested within the Chancel, for use during special services or music events. Overall cost on this project was key, so we worked closely with the church to provide a design that not only came within their budget, but offered the flexibility and improvements set out in their project brief.
We were able to provide a design that utilised their existing dimming system and majority of existing wiring, but replacing the high level fittings, adding additional illumination to highlight the architectural features. Additional cabling and lighting was installed throughout the Nave on top of the capitals of each column. Small dimmable LED luminaires were installed and positioned to illuminate the arches within the Nave. These were connected to the existing dimmer system to allow for full control from the A/V desk.
To help reduce costs, remote controlled RGBW LED floodlights were installed within the Chancel meaning DMX cables and control equipment wasn’t required. 5 fittings were installed within the Apse windows and 2 for the arches. Each fitting is controlled by a single remote control, allowing any choice of colours to be selected. They could also be selected to provide a warm white colour to match the new high level lighting.
Replacement luminaires were also fitted to the Aisles and Chapel. For areas that aren’t on the dimmer system, we installed rotary dimmers to allow some control of the lighting within these areas.
“We began planning our work with CLS before the pandemic and then the inevitable delay happened whilst the church temporarily closed and fundraising stopped. CLS adjusted with great professionalism to our new timeline and budget. They understood our revised financial constraints and devised a lighting scheme which delivered everything we wanted at a cost we could afford. Once work began it progressed quickly and to schedule. The quality of their work was faultless and Adrian, Jamie and Stewart were a pleasure to work with. They were considerate, worked well alongside other contractors and tidied up brilliantly at the end of each week so we could still run our Sunday services. The result of
their lighting installation is everything we hoped for, transforming the appearance of the church. If you choose to engage CLS to carry out work you will not be disappointed – you will find them to be highly professional, skilled, excellent value, flexible, tidy and a true delight to work with.”
